Thousands of building workers in New York City set to vote to authorize strike
More than 34,000 residential building workers in New York City, including doormen, porters, and superintendents, are set to vote Wednesday on authorizing a strike that could begin as early as next Tuesday if no agreement is reached. The labor dispute involves 32BJ union members across approximately 3,500 buildings in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, with key negotiation points including wages, pensions, healthcare coverage, and a proposed Tier II structure. The Realty Advisory Board argues the current healthcare model is unsustainable, noting that while the average doorman earns about $62,000 annually, total employment costs exceed $112,000 per worker.
