Helicopter crew killed in Greece fires

The National Observatory’s climate tracker meteo.gr said early estimates indicated that over 6,500 hectares (16,000 acres) had been burned in separate fires on the Gulf of Corinth which also swept Porto Germeno. Theodore Giannaros, a wildfire meteorologist and senior researcher at the National Observatory, said the fires around Porto Germeno appeared to have affected an area of over 10,000 hectares — almost double the original estimate. Man shot in Toronto’s Dovercourt Village neighbourhood

Emergency crews were called to the area of Bloor Street and Dovercourt Road just after 5 a.m. Toronto police are investigating after a man was shot outside of a building in the city’s Dovercourt Village neighbourhood. One man was transported to a hospital by paramedics for treatment.

WestJet flight attendants on strike as union, airline fail to come to terms

B.C. wildfires destroy lakeside homes, with 30 new added in past 24 hours

The wildfire service reports that dozens more fires have been sparked and have expanded quickly, due to high winds and lightning strikes, with almost half of the 130 wildfires burning in the province out of control. “Gusts were forecast to reach up to 70 km/h in the Okanagan, however crews on the ground observed sustained 80 km/h winds over the fire and 115 km/h winds at elevation,” the update posted online said. “These winds caused significant challenges and the firefighters, helicopters, airtankers and skimmers were unable to hold the fire.” Shifting winds Saturday forced the fire across.
