Karnataka High Court allows engineering college to terminate faculty on department closure, orders ₹40 lakh compensation per professor
Karnataka High Court upheld an engineering college's right to terminate faculty when closing an unaided department due to declining enrollment, but directed the college to pay ₹40 lakh financial assistance to each affected professor. The court noted that two professors at Malnad College of Engineering in Hassan, who had worked since 1997 and 2005 respectively, had no contractual right to continue until superannuation once their posts were abolished, though the college's decision to close the Automobile Engineering Department was approved by both VTU and AICTE.
