Bengaluru Metro's ₹67,460 crore investment undermined by cost overruns and flawed route planning
Bengaluru Metro has spent ₹67,460 crore to build India's second-largest network (96 km, 83 stations) but faces severe cost escalation and planning failures. Phase 1 costs doubled from ₹6,395 crore (2005) to ₹14,405 crore (2017); Phase 2 rose 53% to ₹40,425 crore. Major employment corridors like Outer Ring Road and Electronics City were excluded from early phases, forcing commuters to wait years for connectivity. Recent fare increases up to 100% compound the problem. Experts cite poor route prioritization, inadequate last-mile connectivity, and political interference as root causes. A 2023 survey found 95% of private vehicle users would switch to metro with reliable feeder services, but current infrastructure forces multiple transfers and longer commute times than private vehicles.
