Algeria’s president seeks death penalty for those who start forest fires
Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has called for the death penalty for anyone who deliberately starts a forest fire after at least 12 people died in wildfires in the country’s northeast. Tebboune ordered Algeria’s justice minister on Sunday to submit a proposal by September 15 to amend the penal code to allow capital punishment for those convicted of intentionally setting forest fires, state media reported. At least 46 fires are still burning across the country, and a total of 193 fires have been recorded in the past 24 hours.

Oil prices climb as US, Iranian attacks stoke fears of escalation
Oil prices have been volatile since a 60-day ceasefire between the US and Iran expired in mid-August, denting hopes of a return to pre-war levels of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a conduit for about one-fifth of global oil supplies in peacetime. “The oil market is increasingly realising we may be in for a protracted ‘no war, no peace’ situation, with only partial volumes flowing through the strait, that could last well into 2027,” Kavonic said. Tony Sycamore, a senior market analyst at IG Markets, said oil prices could ease in spite of the latest flare-up in violence if “dark”.
